We are the Housestaff Association of the University of Colorado Hospitals.
We represent nearly 1,300 resident doctors and fellows (housestaff) across the University of Colorado hospitals and affiliates. We have advocated for our colleagues since HSA’s founding in 1969, and are proud to continue that work today. Committing to our mission of progress through accountability has led us to our latest goal: winning full collective bargaining rights.
Over the years, HSA’s advocacy has won: a 15% stipend increase; $1,000 moving stipend for all incoming interns; 2x retirement match; tangible workplace improvements like bike storage and better workrooms. With your help, we can continue to advocate to make the lives of all residents and fellows.
Beyond this, HSA secured a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with GME leadership in 2026, formalizing our role as the voice of residents and fellows at the University of Colorado. The MOU guarantees regular meetings with GME and School of Medicine leadership, a structured process for annual stipend and benefits negotiations, a dispute resolution process, and HSA representation on key institutional committees. HSA's seat at the table is no longer informal — it's official. This is a major milestone, but an MOU is not a collective bargaining agreement. While it establishes a strong working relationship and concrete commitments, it does not carry the full legal protections of a union contract.
To fully realize HSA’s advocacy potential, our membership is crucial. Opting in isn’t automatic, but it is easy and secure.
